LONDON (ICIS)–Covestro has entered an agreement with US firm Encina for the supply of chemically recycled raw materials, the Germany-based polymers producer said on Wednesday.

Circular chemicals producer Encina will supply Covestro with benzene and toluene from its world-scale production facility in Point Township, Pennsylvania, now expected online at the end of 2027.

The feedstocks will be derived from end-of-life plastics and will meet ISCC PLUS (International Sustainability & Carbon Certification) standard.

Covestro will use the feedstocks to produce methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) and toluene diisocyanate (TDI). The benzene can also be used for the synthesis of phenol and acetone.

“The ability to source raw materials from used plastics for the manufacture of our products makes a decisive contribution to realizing our vision of a circular economy,” said Thorsten Dreier, the company’s chief technology officer.
